How Much Does Tree Removal Cost in Essex? (2026 Price Guide)

The quick answer

Tree removal across Essex typically falls between £300 and £2,500, depending on the tree and the access. Small ornamental trees in an easy-to-reach garden are at the lower end. Large mature trees near houses, fences, or power lines are at the top. The honest answer is that without seeing the tree, no tree surgeon can give you a meaningful price — anyone who quotes over the phone without asking questions is winging it.

What affects the price

Size of the tree. The biggest single factor. A 6-metre cherry tree is a very different job to a 20-metre oak. Height, trunk diameter, and crown spread all matter.

Species. Some trees are easier to fell than others. Conifers tend to be straightforward. Oaks, with their dense, heavy timber, are slower work.

Access. Can we get a chipper close to the tree? Can the timber be dropped without damaging anything? A tree in the middle of a clear field is half the price of the same tree wedged between a greenhouse and a fence.

Location of the tree. Close to a house, shed, or power lines, the job has to be sectioned down piece by piece using ropes and climbing kit. That can double or triple the time.

Stump. Most quotes are for the tree only. If you want the stump ground out too, factor in another £80–£250 depending on size.

Debris removal. Some homeowners keep the logs for firewood, which knocks money off the price. If you want it all gone, that's chipper time plus a green waste run.

Rough price guide by size

Small tree (under 5m): £200–£450. Things like ornamental cherries, small fruit trees, large shrubs.

Medium tree (5–10m): £400–£900. Standard garden trees — silver birch, rowan, smaller conifers.

Large tree (10–20m): £800–£1,800. Mature oaks, large limes, big leylandii rows.

Very large or difficult tree (20m+): £1,500–£2,500+. Veteran trees, anything near buildings or power lines.

Add £100–£250 for stump grinding on most jobs.

Why you should get more than one quote

Tree work pricing varies wildly between contractors. We'd actually recommend getting three quotes for any job over £500 — not because we're worried about losing the work, but because it's the only way to know what's fair. If two quotes come in around the same and one's much higher or much lower, that's a flag.

Watch out for the very low quote. Tree work without proper insurance is a disaster waiting to happen — if a tree falls on your neighbour's car and your tree surgeon isn't insured, that bill lands on you.

What you should always ask

— Are you fully insured? (Ask for proof.)

— Are you a registered waste carrier? (Required by law to take green waste off-site.)

— Will you sign a quote so the price is locked in?

— Is the stump included or extra?

— Is the debris removal included or extra?
